New Zealand Lamb - The Natural Advantage

New Zealand lamb is raised free range, grazing in natural pastures. The climate of New Zealand is temperate, being neither excessively hot nor cold. This means that lambs are able to be left on pasture year round with no indoor shelter, heating, or supplemental feeding of concentrated or processed foods necessary. New Zealand lamb is prepared within a short distance of the farm.

What are "Food Miles"?

Quite rightly, global attention has become much more focused on the energy used in preparation of our foods. Because of this, there is growing discussion about "Food Miles" which relates to the distance that food must travel from its origin to consumption. The belief is that the further food travels before it is eaten, the greater the energy used, carbon dioxide produced, and therefore environmental impact. It is a simple and attractive idea, however the concept of food miles can be misleading to the environmentally aware consumer as it doesn't actually provide a true measure of the total energy used in producing foods, as well as in transporting them to market. The assumption underlying the food miles debate is that foods produced closer to their market destinations are less energy intensive. While appearing straightforward, this may be far from true - transport can in fact be a minimal part of the total energy used in production of many foods.

Even with transport taken into consideration, New Zealand lamb is much more energy efficient than intensely farmed alternatives. Being pasture raised in temperate conditions without the need for buildings for shelter and warmth, with no protection required from predators, no supplemental grain feeding needed (so without the costs and energy use required for grain production) and reduced fertilizer use (fertilizer requires large amounts of energy to produce, and cause significant CO2 emissions), New Zealand lamb is very efficiently produced and really does have the "natural advantage".

So enjoy your delicious Pilot New Zealand Lamb with a clear conscience!
