New Zealand Lamb The largest supplier of internationally traded lamb, New Zealand has long been famous for its natural unspoiled beauty, lush pastures and the quality of its export lamb. At Pilot Brands, we take our commitment to quality seriously and work closely with selected suppliers to ensure the quality of a New Zealand lamb experience carries through to our customers and the consumer. Lamb SelectionNew Zealand lambs processed for Pilot Brands are supplied from selected ranches, raised free range and free of added hormones and steroids. Pilot Brands’ major supplier of NZ Lambs, Bernard Matthews New Zealand Ltd (BMNZ), selects most of their lambs from a ‘Producer Group’ which is made up of selected Ranchers who meet strict animal health, animal welfare and food safety criteria. This includes ensuring that their yards meet minimum safety criteria in design (to prevent damage or bruising to the lamb), that lambs are free of added hormones and steroids, and that the lambs are free range fed (no food supplements). Lambs are chosen for regularity in size, condition and fat cover to provide consistency in portion sizing and quality. Bernard Matthews processes around 1˝ million lambs every year, so the company is able to select only the best lambs to be packed into the Pilot label. Having almost all Pilot brand product packed at one plant means the consistency of the product is unparalleled. New Zealand lamb is raised free range, grazing in natural pastures. The climate of New Zealand is temperate, being neither excessively hot nor cold. This means that lambs are able to be left on pasture year round with no indoor shelter or supplemental feeding necessary – there is no feed lotting, and none of the antibiotic regimes associated with feed lots. Use of HGPs (hormone growth promotants) on lamb is strictly prohibited by an Act of Parliament in New Zealand guaranteeing that Pilot Brand lamb is free of added hormones.
